The journey of Caterpillar in India began with Hindustan Motors at Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. Caterpillar established a joint venture with Hindustan Motors in 1984 and acquired 100 per cent of Hindustan Motor’s earthmoving equipment division in 2001. Similarly, Caterpillar India’s Hosur operations became a wholly Caterpillar owned business in 2006.
Caterpillar’s efforts to setup, sustain and expand manufacturing facilities and R&D centres in Tamil Nadu have received the consistent support from the State Government. The investments have paid off primarily owing to factors such as availability of a pool of talented workforce, ease of connectivity by sea, air and road; uninterrupted water and power supply, etc. The role of the State Government of Tamil Nadu in promoting and supporting economic and industrial growth has been noteworthy.
Some of the products manufactured at the facilities in Tamil Nadu include backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders, hydraulic excavators, diesel generating sets ranging from 500-2000 kVA, internal combustion engines, genset packages and components; four models of off-highway trucks (40,50,60,100 ton), and small drive train transmissions that assemble into backhoe loaders and small wheel loaders. A competent team of over 900 engineers at the Caterpillar India Design Center in Chennai provides product development and associated engineering services to over 40 Caterpillar business units across the globe. Also, The Electronics and Systems Integration India division which is also located in Tamil Nadu develops and delivers electrical, electronic, software and hardware solutions to global process partners within Caterpillar.
