Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (TIDCO) established the first integrated Steel Plant with a state-of-the-art facility in the State at Mettur, Salem during the year 1991-1996 with a capacity of 3 Lakhs Tons / year at a cost of Rs.1035 Crores. Its capacity has expanded to 1 million Tons / year of rolled products at a cost of Rs.1200 Crores.
TIDCO has invested Rs.36 Crores in the equity capital of Southern Iron & Steel Company Ltd. (SISCOL) with a capital outlay of Rs.2235 Crores which was merged with JSW Steel Ltd., in the year 2005. The Steel Plant provides direct employment for 3000 persons and another 3000 by indirect employment.
JSW Salem unit is the largest special steel producer in India catering to the requirements of various Automobile customers like : Honda, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Timken, Maruti, Ford, etc., for manufacturing components viz., Crank Shaft, Connecting Rod, Cam Shaft, Hub bearing, Spindle, Leaf spring and Front axle, etc.

In order to meet the needs of the high end customers, the unit is continuously investing in high end equipment and making on know-hows for quality material production by continuous R&D /Total Quality Management (TQM) systems.
