Daimler believes in Tamil Nadu’s potential

Total dedicated investment of over INR 5,000 cr. being made

When we entered the Indian market, we wanted to produce our trucks as well as have RnD facilities. We looked at many other states in India but the infrastructure that an automotive industry needs is best available here.

FELIX HOMBURG, HEAD OF OPS, DAIMLER INDIA C.V.

Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach.

Daimler has always believed in Tamil Nadu’s potential. Their state-of-the-art production plant at Oragadam Chennai with a capacity of 70,000 units per year, spread over acres stands as testimony to this fact. The plant includes a modern test tract designed to stimulate Indian conditions – making it one of its kind in Asia. DISC has made total dedicated investment of over INR 5,000 cr.

The state of the art production plant, constructed in a record time of about 24 months, was formally inaugurated by the auspicious hands of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on April 18, 2012. A lot of credit for the company’s success in India goes to the state of Tamil Nadu and its pro-industry leadership. The Government of Tamil Nadu facilitated uninterrupted power supply, 400 acres of land on which they are operating and attractive package with fiscal incentives. Guidance Bureau and Industries Department have played a key role in facilitating all approvals related to licenses and clearances besides being instrumental in creating investor friendly relations.

The comprehensive, in-house, state-of-the-art test track was the first initiative of Daimler in developing trucks for India. The test track which is based in Tamil Nadu was designed based on meticulous research done on road-load data patterns across the country, on various terrains. The R&D proto-shop plays a critical role in development of proto-samples which are precision tested for conformance to the global benchmarks of quality. It also provides simulation and other testing trails of aggregates and sub-assemblies during the product development phase.

The rigorous testing ensures that every truck that rolls out of the plant is of the highest quality and reflects the legendry Daimler standards of engineering.
